End of $500 Dollars Challenge

[ February 7th, 2008 ] Posted in » Challenges
Written by: Derek

Today is the end of my $500 challenge and i regret to say that i actually failed to meet my target. I failed miserably. Through this challenge, it makes me realised important values that i am lacking and on the other hand, i learnt my mistakes as well.

So why did i failed to meet my target? One fatal mistake is ” LAZY!” As mentioned, my plan to make that $500 is to make 10 niche sites, selling each for $50. And up to now, i only done 2 niche sites. Why is that so? Because i had been telling myself, “Hey relax, theres still tomorrow, i will do the others tomorrow, will rest and slack for today!” And due to this, i only spent around 2 days instead of the whole month to do the sites. I am disappointed in myself. :( Have been thinking, if i am consistent, am i able to meet that target? I still remember a very “nice” advice given by one of my lecturer, mr eng. He told us about the 2.4km run thing. What he trying to protray to us is never do last minute work and tell us to always be consistent in our work.

Another thing i learnt is the competition in the industry. I guess i seriously need to improve my skills. I am lagging damn behind. Apart from listing my niches sites for auction, i had been observing other niche sites as well and while observing, i felt so depressed. There are far lot of niches site that are FAR better then what i had created and are selling at lower price. This is another very important thing that is lacking in me. I lack the skills in web developing and designing. Looking at those sites allows me see the “light”. I sucks in web designing and development. This is quite a setback for me, as i have always been thinking that developing websites is my ”strongest weapon” that i had. This make me realised that if i did not put in the effort to improve my skills, i will not be able to survive in this industry sooner or later. Competition is stiff and your competitors never wait for you. This is what i realised.

Things had been going smoothly for me in the past 2 years and i think that this make me “slack” and makes me NOT to realise that importance of upgrading oneself. You maybe good at this point of time, but as times goes on, things may change. You may find yourself lagging behind people that you once surpassed. While you have been thinking in your sweet dreams, ” i am good, i can train lesser, my competitors wont be able to surpass me”?, your competitors had been training consistently and finally there will be a day where they totally surpassed you.

Although i failed in this challenge, i am not going to stop here. I will be picking myself up, improve things i lack, and then, when i feels its time again, i will challenge myself again..

Below is how much i earn : $50 for one niche site, and $60 for another.

So in total, i only earn $105.66/$500.00 and this is an utterly defeat for me.

As promised, congratuations to Mr Hong Beng Hwee and Mr Mike J. Pruett for being the winner of the domain name lucky draw. Had sent an email to you regarding how you will be receiving the domain. :)

For my plans after the end of my Industrial attachment, i would most proabably be resting, recharging myself, preparing for ns(still have a presentation to go). However, as usual, i will also be active in digitalpoint forums.. lol.

I am also thinking of looking for some jobs(online or offline) to earn some money. As mentioned in the earlier posts, i had been spenting far more then earning, thus i think i really need to find a solution before i go bankrupt. Also, i would take this period of time during my long holiday to do something that i wanted to do and to figure out and sort out some complicated stuffs.

Chinese new year is coming and i hope everyone will have a prosperous and harmonious year. :D Peace everyone

Time flies. 6 years in primary school, 4 years in secondary school and 3 years in polytecnhic.. 13 years… It does’nt seem to be long, but its not short either. I met different types of people, being through different kind of problems. Experiencing happiness, boredom, sadness, stress and many more. Imerging from a teengaer to a young man, “maturity” is one thing for sure. I myself believed that i have matured alot during this 13 years. Those of you who had been through with me during my primary and secondary school life will see how “different” i am from those years.

One of the  important things that i learnt is “You reap what you sow”. Putting in effort is important. I seen smart people that were able to understand things in  a very short amount of time, they can absorb and understand fully e.g. some codings in just 10 minutes. I really admire them. And for me, in order to reach their level, i had to spent 40 minutes. I, myselfbelong to that “not so smart” category. Some of you may not know, i am not able to understand and absorb things as fast as others. In fact, i think i spent 4 times longer then others. So, the final product you see in me, is not what i am initially, its what i am, after putting in 4 times effort. This is one thing, that i had learnt during my polytechnic life. So, i think its a matter of effort put in.

I learnt another important thing from one of my friend. He is “DAMN” academically strong. I have been thinking, why some people can do so well in exams, while i cannot? So i decided to ask some of very academically strong friends, and guess what? the answer i get from them is similar. The advice that i get from them is “Study over and over again until can even dream of it when you sleep” I found out from most of my “smart” friends that even though tomorrow is just a history test, they studied again and again. Not just one time, its five or six times. I tried this method, and this really WORKS. So i found out that examinations is not a matter of how much you know, but how much you prepared it.

Lastly for today’s post, i learnt what is “to get what you want, ones must sacrifice. Let me give an very “history” example: many many lifes are lost before a dynasty is developed. So applying them to exams, i realised one had to sacrifice time and effort in order to get good results. And one thing that my friend point out to me is. ” Study smart, Not Hard”
I agreed with that totally. I tried studying very hard but in the end, i did not get the results that i wanted. Do you encountered this problem as me? The reason of this is because i  did not study smart. Basically, that friend of mine said preparing examinations actually playing mind games with the teacher, and he adviced me to always shortlist questions that are most probably have the highest chance into coming out for examinations and focus on them more. But of course, not neglecting others as well.

Also, when preparing from examinations, do not just study from the book. I realised that my school always give tips for examinations. And because of those tips, most of the students will expectedly get good results. But however, i remembered one thing that my maths lecturer, “Mr Khoo” said. There is always a curve. Which means, its impossible for everyone to get good results. There will be moderation to make sure everything is a curve. That was contradicting right? Then why give us tips? I also don’t know why… So when studying for exams, e.g. one of the tips that teacher give is that “dhcp” will be coming out for paper. Instead of just learning from the book, only the definition of what dhcp is? study out of the book, like which port dhcp uses, how it works etc. I think that will differientates your papers from others.

Till now, i still could not totally grasp on the tips my friends gave me for studying for examinations and i am still learning from it. But, i would like to thank them for sharing with me those valuable tips that discovered. Thus, i am sharing it with all my friends, and i believed that those tips that we discovered will help us in future. If you have any different tips, advices, or comments, questions, problems, please discuss it here. Lets all help one another in future. Like the saying “Two brain is definitely better then one brain” Lets Share and benefit!
