Flipping websites or not?

[ August 28th, 2008 ] Posted in » Daily Ramblings

This question goes out to all those webmasters who have been been flipping websites. Why do you choose to flip a website? Instead of developing it, maintaining it and earning an passive income, why flip it? I have been flipping a number of websites since then and below are some of my experiences and thoughts into it.

Pros of Flipping a website

1) You get instant cash in your paypal balance. You do not need to wait for monthly checks from adsense, CJ or clickbank( If you monetized your website with affilite programs).

2) You get big payments in short term. Example, if you flip a website for $200 per day. But how long can it last?

3) I could not think of any others. Anyone got any idea?

Cons of Flipping a website

1) It’s a tiring process.

2) Sites that are developed for the purpose of  flipping are not of quality as they are just there for sale. You developed it in a short time frame just to sell it, thus standard of that website is definitely not good.

3) You need to look for buyers, such as posting it for sale and sometimes you won’t get any.

4) You won’t get big deals from buyers as those site are un-established. Buyers probably buy it to solve the hassle of creating it from scratch.

If there’s anything that you disagree or anything that i missed, please correct me. If the above question is directed to me, my answer will be no, but to some extent. Instead of just develop websites soley for the purpose of flipping, why not put in all your time and effort into one website? 100 websites with making 10 dollars per month or one website making 1000 dollars per month? Which is easier to maintain and monetize? Which of them has more value?  Which of them has more potential?

I say to some extent because sometimes when i am free, i really enjoy flipping websites, earning some petty cash. However, i won’t treat it as my main stream of income. In my opinion, it’s better to create a project that earns you alot, rather than alot of projects that earn you pennies. It add more value into it. You only need one big and good project in order to succeed. Just like facebook, did mark zuckerberg develop many websites? He just develop facebook and it earns money that can last him for a lifetime.

Sometimes when you download files online, you get many different file extensions such as .zip, .pdf, .rar etc. Ok, you downloaded a file with the file extension avi and you do not know what program to install so as to open up the file. Don’t panick! File-extension.com, a subdivison of Uniblue is there to solve your problem.

As mentioned above, the website that we are reviewing today on “Talk of the day” is a tool created by Uniblue, www.file-extension.com. Basically, this website acts as a search engine that allows you to search for more information about file extensions. For more information, file extension is the last few characters after the ( . ) period from the filename. Different programs can be use to open up files with different file extensions. For example, adobe arcobat is use to open pdf files, windows media player to open .mpg files, dreamweaver for .html files and so on.

File-extension.com is an free online library that contains a comprehrensive database of file extensions, detailed information of what each file extension is, what they are used for? what are the different programs that are associated with each file extensions and even information on how to solve and fix problems relating to each extensions. It’s a pretty useful and nice tool to use!

Below is an example on how to use file-extension.com to find out more information about the file extension class

Step 1

Go to file-extension.com and type in the file extension class in the text field.

Step 2

There’s no step 2, very straightforward and simple right? You can view all information about the .class file

You can see from the above screenshot that despite on just providing information on how to open, execute a class file, it even provide recommendations for the user. There are free tools to run a performance test, driver test etc. You can scan your pc system using the provided tools to prevent and identify any errors associated with the file extensions.

I hope today’s review will provide you another alternative file extension tool that you can bookmark as your favorites.

Being a “high profile” person

[ August 26th, 2008 ] Posted in » Daily Ramblings
Written by: Webmaster Guy

I feel that i am always being “buried”. Just recently, i found out that there’s a need to build up your reputation if you want to get business deals and even you want to have more friends or success. Being a low profile guy won’t do you any good in future, that what i realised. In the past, i thought that by staying in a “low profile” form, i could have the same trust, i could got the same opportunities as others, but over the years, i am wrong. Frankly speaking, deep in my heart, i always admire those people who have good looks, good appearance because they are by in default, “high profile”. Normally, they don’t need to make friends or have opportunities, those just come to them naturally.

I am that kind of person whom just wanted to complete things silently on my own, putting in my finest effort ( a slient worker). But this kind of attitude that i have is not going to bring me towards my dream, in fact, it impeding my progress. I really do not know how to define trust and ability? Here’s two of the many scenarios that i faced.

1) There’s one guy who is a straight A’s student in the past but however he is kind of cocky (Strangely, he have alot of friends and words he said have “impact”). This happen in a scenario where it’s just a few hours before examination. Someone was discussing about some questions before examination and asked some questions regarding a subject. The straight A’s student wasn’t really right in explaining that questions, he was wrong. Well, i was there too and i tried to correct the mistake that he made. But however, no one listened to me, they doubted me. Just because i am not as good as that guy, my words have no influence at all. I know i am right, but i failed to convince people around me. This type of incident happens regularly to me. i don’t know why people can’t just believe in me. That is why i feel very inspired when people tend to ask me for question and advice. And normally, i would my best to help them and teach them all i know,  if i know the solution.

2) Here’s another one. This happen when i was in some sort of community and we are doing some proposal work. As usual, i was a low profile guy but however i did my part as a member. Here comes to the part where i tried to offer my help in some report using microsoft word. I have experience in microsoft word for years and have been using it since i was in middle school. Ok, this guy was trying to insert a report header in the document and he was doing it wrong. He just copy and paste in every page of the document. I saw that mistake and i tried to explain to him. Then he said, “You know, our senior told us to do this, we need to insert header in the report every page, just don’t bother me, you are just a helper”. So i just smiled and walk away. Ok, if that’s the way you want, fine with me. That is the reason why i quit that community later on. Community with that kind of project leaders isn’t worth it for me to serve.

All this happened because i do not have the reputation and influence over others. Just like being as an employee in a company, opportunties are always given to those “high profile” people even though you are more skilled. Actually, this is my bad and i failed to realise it till then. Just like starting a website, if you do not advertise it, people wont know it’s existence. Same thing applies, if you have the skills but no one know your real skills, what is the use? When doing business such as buying web hosting, even though i can offer the same package with lower price, better quality, better support, people just choose those reputable companies over me. Why?

That’s how the world works and let’s face it.

How to Sell a Website

[ August 25th, 2008 ] Posted in » Talk of the day
Written by: Webmaster Guy

Selling a website is no easy task. Of course, you don’t want to just give out all of your hard work for a price you would only reluctantly accept. However, what if there’s no market demand for your website at all?

Ultimately, what buyers need to understand is that the price they get all comes down to market demand. If someone in the market is looking to strategically acquire websites, of course you will be able to obtain premiums. However, it’s not always easy to determine whether someone is looking for a strategic acquisition or a mere portfolio expansion. Most naive buyers will be blatant about it, but it’s not always the case. Strong negotiation skills and a background in psychology will help you tremendously here.

In most cases, website valuation involves the income, traffic, domain, and other such factors. When selling websites, nothing is absolute. While an appraiser may give you a rough estimate, buyers may nitpick some factors over others.

Unlike real estate, in the world of buying and selling websites, the price can fluctuate wildly from one day to the next. It’s your job to keep everything stable throughout the span of the sale.
